I come across so many interesting and useful tools and resources everyday. This blog is to share anything I think is interesting and helpful. Though I hope that it serves GIS professionals and cartographers, I also hope that a general audience will also find a use for it.

GeoNames is a free and opensource geographical database. "It integrates world-wide geographical data including names of places in various languages, elevation, population, and all latitude / longitude coordinates". This interview with Marc Wick gives you a better understanding of GeoNames and some interesting background about the project.

You can now view EPA's up to date air quality data from AIRNow in Google Earth.  Data is updated hourly for all major cities in the United States and is easily accesible.  All you need to do is open the AIRNow tool (in KML format) in your Google Earth Browser.
