Earth Pulse, from National Geographic,  is a good visual for explaining some of the current issues and trends facing our world. In addition to maps and imagery, there is some basic descriptive text.

The three trends focues on

• The Human Condition-looking at population, quallity of life, human impact, and food and water
• Our Relationship to nature- looking at ecosystems and conservation, and energy and carbon.
• Our connected world trends- exploring tecnology, and globalization

It's not an interactive mapping tool (which would have been nice) but it does have some interesting maps and imagery and looks at a topic that I think is at the forefront of a lot of conversations.
