Accessing Data

Copies of the CensusCD Cd-ROMs and CensusCD software are available in MIUS in room GL 273.

Why Use CensusCD?

Census CD allows you to extract data, map the data, and then export the data as a shapefile for use in ArcGIS, as well as generate a report.  Please note, not all information can be mapped, but most of it can be.

Getting Started*

  1. Insert CD-ROM.
  2. Select “Start”>>All Programs>>CensusCD 2000 (short form, long form, or blocks).  Census CD software will open.
  3. From the tool bar select File>>New Request File. Give your search a name, ie. Dade_race*.req. Select your Z:// drive from the Drives drop down menu, then select the folder where you would like to save your data. Click “Ok”. This is where CensusCD will put the data it retrieves for you.
  4. Next select “area”. You can select “geographic area” (ie. State, county, zipcode) or radius (i.e. latitude/longitude). Select the appropriate information and then select “done”. You can also select a “subarea”.
  5. Next select counts>>display.  This is where the demographic data such as age, sex, and race are listed.  Select the search button on the right hand side.  A search box will pop up. In the search box select the information you would like to extract (housing, age etc) then select “find”.  This will provide a list of all the counts for a specific topic such as housing.  From that list, you may now select the appropriate counts. Once you have highlighted the counts, select “add”. You can continue adding counts or, if you have finished, select “done”.
  6. Now you have entered enough information to generate reports or maps.

·        To generate a report select “run”>>”report”. The information for the area you have selected will appear as a report.  You can print this document as a .pdf and save to your Z://drive.

·        To generate a map select “run”>>”map”.  Note: If “map” is grayed out in the Run drop down list, this means the data cannot be mapped. The map will appear in a new window. To export the map as a shapefile, select File>>Exoprt>>To ArcView’s shape. The map will be exported to the drive and file you initially entered in Step 1.

*You can follow these steps for CensusCD 1970, 1980, and 1990 but be aware that some slight variations in the steps may occur. Detailed user guides for all CensusCD CD-ROMS are available in MIUS.
